How to Lay Laminate Flooring in a Small Hallway

Installing laminate flooring in a small hallway can enhance its aesthetic appeal and durability. Here's a comprehensive guide to assist you with this project:

Preparation:

1. Clear the hallway of all furniture and obstacles. 2. Remove any existing flooring, baseboards, and moldings. 3. Inspect the subfloor for any unevenness or damage and repair as necessary.

Laying the Underlayment:

1. Roll out the underlayment in strips parallel to the direction of the hallway. 2. Use tape to secure the underlayment seams to prevent movement. 3. Ensure the underlayment extends slightly beyond the edges of the hallway.

Installing the Laminate Planks:

1. Determine the starting point along one wall of the hallway. 2. Angle the first plank slightly and insert its tongue into the groove of the first underlayment strip. 3. Secure the plank in place with a tapping block and hammer.

4. Continue installing the planks in a staggered pattern, alternating the starting ends. 5. Use spacers to maintain a consistent gap around the edges of the hallway.

Cutting the Planks:

1. Measure and mark the planks to be cut at the end of each row or around any obstacles. 2. Use a circular saw or a laminate flooring cutter to make precise cuts.

Installing the Baseboards and Moldings:

1. Reinstall the baseboards and moldings after all the laminate planks are installed. 2. Use a miter saw to cut the baseboards and moldings at the corners for a clean finish. 3. Secure the baseboards and moldings with nails or screws.

Tips for Small Hallways:

1. Use planks with a lighter or natural woodgrain to make the hallway appear more spacious. 2. Install the planks in the same direction as the length of the hallway to create a sense of flow. 3. Consider using a moisture-resistant underlayment in high-traffic areas.
