How To Install Vinyl Plank Flooring Over Subfloor

Vinyl plank flooring is an excellent option for those looking for an attractive and durable flooring solution. It is easy to install and can be done over most subfloors, including concrete, plywood, and even existing vinyl flooring. Here are the essential steps on how to install vinyl plank flooring over a subfloor:

1. Prepare the subfloor: The first step is to prepare the subfloor by making sure it is level, smooth, and dry. Any unevenness or debris can cause the vinyl planks to buckle or warp over time. If the subfloor is not level, you may need to level it using a self-leveling compound.

2. Install an underlayment: An underlayment is a thin layer of material that goes between the subfloor and the vinyl planks. It helps to reduce sound, insulate the floor, and provide a moisture barrier. There are various types of underlayment available, so choose one that is appropriate for your subfloor and the type of vinyl plank flooring you are installing.

3. Start installing the vinyl planks: Begin by measuring the room and determining the layout of the planks. You will need to cut the planks to fit around the perimeter of the room and any obstacles, such as cabinets or appliances. When cutting the planks, use a sharp utility knife and a straight edge to ensure clean cuts.

4. Lock the planks together: Most vinyl planks have a locking system that allows them to be easily clicked together. Start by connecting the first two planks together on the long side, then angle the next plank and click it into place. Continue this process until the entire row is complete. Once the first row is complete, you can start the next row, staggering the joints by at least 6 inches.

5. Trim the edges: Once all the planks are installed, you will need to trim the edges around the perimeter of the room. Use a utility knife to carefully score the planks along the wall, then use a pry bar to gently lift the planks and snap them off.

6. Install baseboards: Baseboards will help to cover the expansion gap between the vinyl planks and the wall. Measure and cut the baseboards to fit the perimeter of the room, then nail or glue them into place.

7. Clean and maintain: Once the vinyl plank flooring is installed, sweep or vacuum it regularly to remove dirt and debris. You can also mop the floor with a mild detergent, but avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
