EPDM Rubber Flooring Installation: Essential Aspects

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber flooring is a popular choice for various applications due to its durability, flexibility, and ease of maintenance. Proper installation is crucial to ensure the floor's longevity and performance. Here are the essential aspects of EPDM rubber flooring installation:

Surface Preparation

The surface to be installed must be clean, level, and dry. Remove any debris, grease, or old flooring materials. Ensure the surface is flat with a tolerance of 1/8 inch over 10 feet. Any unevenness can lead to premature wear and tear of the flooring.

Laying the Underlayment

An underlayment is essential for providing a moisture barrier, reducing noise, and enhancing comfort. Use a high-quality underlayment specifically designed for EPDM rubber flooring. Roll out the underlayment and secure it with double-sided tape.

Cutting the Tiles

Measure the area to be covered and mark the cut lines on the EPDM rubber tiles using a straight edge and utility knife. Use a sharp blade to ensure clean cuts.

Applying the Adhesive

Spread the adhesive evenly over the underlayment using a notched trowel. Allow the adhesive to become tacky according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Installing the Tiles

Start installing the tiles from the center of the room and work your way out. Place the tiles firmly on the adhesive, ensuring they are level and properly aligned. Use a rubber mallet to tap and seat the tiles firmly.

Expansion Joints

Expansion joints are essential to allow for movement and prevent buckling. Leave a gap of approximately 1/4 inch around the perimeter of the room and between rows of tiles.

Grouting and Sealing

Once the tiles are installed, fill the expansion joints with grout. Use a flexible grout specifically designed for rubber flooring. After grouting, apply a sealant to protect the flooring from moisture and wear.
