How to Install the End Piece of Laminate Flooring
Installing laminate flooring can be a rewarding DIY project. Once you've laid out the majority of the floor, you'll need to install the end pieces to complete the job. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you do it right:
Step 1: Measure and Cut the End Piece
Measure the distance from the last full plank to the wall. Subtract 1/4 inch to allow for expansion. Transfer this measurement to the end piece and mark the cut line. Use a laminate cutter or a fine-tooth saw to make the cut.
Step 2: Install the End Piece
Position the end piece against the last full plank and align it with the wall. Tap the end piece into place using a tapping block and a hammer. Work your way from one end to the other, tapping evenly to ensure a tight fit.
Step 3: Trim the Excess
Once the end piece is installed, trim the excess that extends beyond the wall. Use a utility knife or a laminate cutter to score the flooring along the wall line. Snap the excess piece off.
Step 4: Secure the End Piece
Apply a small amount of wood glue to the bottom edge of the end piece. Insert a brad nailer into the tongue of the end piece and drive a brad nail through into the subfloor. Countersink the brad nail slightly using a nail set.
Step 5: Fill the Gaps
Use a laminate filler kit to fill any gaps between the end piece and the wall. Apply the filler with a putty knife and smooth it out. Allow the filler to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 6: Install the Transition Piece
If necessary, install a transition piece to join the laminate flooring to another type of flooring. Measure and cut the transition piece to fit the space between the laminate flooring and the other flooring.
Secure the transition piece to the subfloor using screws or nails. Countersink the fasteners slightly below the surface.
Tips:
- Use a tapping block to protect the laminate flooring from damage when tapping it into place.
- Drive the brad nails at an angle to ensure a secure hold.
- Allow the laminate flooring to acclimate to the room temperature for at least 24 hours before installing.
- Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the floor to prevent buckling.
- Clean up any excess glue or filler with a damp cloth.
