Installing Wide Plank Engineered Wood Flooring: Essential Aspects

Wide plank engineered wood flooring has become increasingly popular due to its durability, beauty, and ease of installation. By following these essential steps, you can successfully install wide plank engineered wood flooring in your home.

1. Preparation

Before beginning the installation, ensure that the subfloor is level and smooth. Remove any existing flooring or carpet, and repair any unevenness. Clean the subfloor thoroughly to remove dust and debris.

2. Moisture Barrier

Install a moisture barrier, such as a plastic sheet, between the subfloor and underlayment to prevent moisture from seeping into the flooring. Overlap the sheets by at least 6 inches and tape the seams for a secure seal.

3. Underlayment

Roll out the underlayment over the moisture barrier. This layer provides cushioning and additional sound insulation. Cut the underlayment to fit the room, leaving a small gap around the perimeter.

4. Layout and Dry Fit

Plan the direction of the planks and dry fit them first to ensure a pleasing layout and minimize waste. Adjust the planks as needed to create a straight and even pattern.

5. Starting Row

Install the first row of planks parallel to the longest wall, using spacers to maintain even spacing. Secure the planks to the subfloor using a nail gun or flooring stapler. Countersink the nails slightly below the surface.

6. Subsequent Rows

Continue installing subsequent rows by angling the planks at a slight angle to the previous row. Use a tapping block and hammer to gently tap the planks together and ensure a tight fit. Stagger the end joints for added strength.

7. Outside Cuts and Accessories

For outside cuts around walls or obstacles, use a table saw to cut the planks to the desired shape. Install transition strips or molding where the flooring meets other surfaces, such as carpet or tile.

8. Trimming and Finishing

Trim the edges of the flooring using a circular saw and remove any excess underlayment. Install baseboard or quarter-round molding to cover the expansion gap and complete the installation.

9. Maintenance and Care

To maintain the beauty and durability of your wide plank engineered wood flooring, sweep or vacuum regularly and occasionally mop with a mild cleaning solution. Avoid excessive moisture and protect the flooring from scratches and heavy traffic.
