How to Install Laminate Flooring: A Comprehensive Guide

Laminate flooring planks
Underlayment
Vapor barrier (if needed)
Laminate flooring adhesive

Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor

Ensure that the subfloor is clean, level, and dry. Remove any nails or debris. If there are any uneven areas, use a self-leveling compound to smooth them out. A vapor barrier may be necessary to prevent moisture from rising through the subfloor.

Step 2: Install the Underlayment

Roll out the underlayment over the prepared subfloor, overlapping the seams by several inches. Use tape to secure the underlayment in place.

Step 3: Determine the Starting Point and Layout

Measure the area and determine the center point of the room. Use this point as the starting point for laying the flooring. Begin by installing a full row of planks lengthwise along one wall.

Step 4: Lock in the Planks

Align the tongue of one plank with the groove of another and angle it slightly upwards. Gently tap the plank into place using a tapping block. Repeat this process for each subsequent plank.

Step 5: Cut and Fit the Planks

To fit the planks around obstacles, measure and mark the cuts using a measuring tape and level. Use a circular saw or utility knife to make precise cuts. Secure the cut planks into place.

Step 6: Install the Last Row

Measure the width of the remaining gap and cut a plank to fit. Flip the plank upside down, apply adhesive to the groove, and slide it into place from the opposite side.
