Vinyl Plank Flooring Over Plywood Subfloor: An Essential Guide

Transforming your home with vinyl plank flooring over a plywood subfloor can be a rewarding project, but it's crucial to consider the proper preparation and installation techniques. This guide explores the essential aspects of installing vinyl plank flooring over plywood, ensuring a durable and aesthetically pleasing result.

Planning and Preparation

Before embarking on the installation process, thorough planning is essential. Determine the square footage of the area being covered and purchase the necessary materials, including vinyl planks, adhesive, spacers, and transition strips.

The plywood subfloor should be smooth, level, and structurally sound. Inspect the subfloor for any unevenness or imperfections. If necessary, level the surface using a self-leveling compound or thin-set mortar.

Underlayment Installation

An underlayment provides a moisture barrier and soundproofing. It also helps to level the subfloor and reduce imperfections. Choose an underlayment specifically designed for vinyl plank flooring.

Roll out the underlayment parallel to the joists of the subfloor, overlapping the seams by at least 2 inches. Secure the underlayment with double-sided tape or staples.

Vinyl Plank Installation

Begin the vinyl plank installation by creating a straight starting line parallel to the longest wall. Apply adhesive to the subfloor and insert the first plank, aligning the tongue with the groove of the starting line.

Stagger the joints of the subsequent planks to create a more stable floor. Apply adhesive to the tongue and groove of each plank before inserting it into the previous one. Use spacers to maintain a consistent gap around the perimeter of the room.

Trim and Transition Strips

Once the vinyl planks are installed, trim excess around the edges using a utility knife. Install transition strips at doorways or between different flooring materials to provide a smooth and seamless transition.

Secure the transition strips with nails or screws. Fill any gaps around the transition strips with caulk or grout to ensure a tight seal.

Finishing Touches

Remove any excess adhesive from the surface of the vinyl planks using a damp cloth. Allow the adhesive to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Vacuum or sweep the floor to remove any debris. Enjoy your newly installed vinyl plank flooring over plywood subfloor!
