1. Gather the Right Tools and Materials

For nailing wood flooring, you'll need a flooring nailer or hammer, nail set, measuring tape, chalk line, pencil, pry bar, and a moisture meter. Ensure the nails you use are flooring-specific, with ringed or barbed shanks for improved holding power.

2. Prepare the Subfloor

Before installing the flooring, ensure the subfloor is level, dry, and free of debris. Use a moisture meter to check for excessive moisture levels that can damage the flooring. If necessary, level the subfloor using self-leveling compound or plywood.

3. Plan the Layout

Determine the starting point for your flooring by snapping chalk lines perpendicular to any walls or fixtures. This layout will guide you as you install the flooring.

4. Install the First Row

Start with the grooved edge of the flooring facing the wall. Nail the first row along the chalk line, leaving a 5/16-inch gap from the wall for expansion. Ensure the nails are countersunk into the flooring using a nail set.
