Laying Parquet Flooring On Tiles: A Comprehensive Guide

Laying parquet flooring on tiles is a popular renovation technique that can transform the look and feel of a room. However, it's important to follow the proper steps to ensure a successful installation. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you lay parquet flooring on tiles like a pro.

Step 1: Preparation

Before you start laying the parquet flooring, it's crucial to prepare the tile surface. Remove any dirt, debris, or old adhesive from the tiles using a cleaning solution and a scrub brush. Allow the tiles to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 2: Leveling the Surface

If the tile surface is uneven, you may need to level it before laying the parquet flooring. Use a self-leveling compound to fill in any gaps or depressions. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and allow the compound to dry completely.

Step 3: Installing the Underlayment

An underlayment is essential to provide a moisture barrier and enhance the soundproofing of the flooring. Choose an underlayment specifically designed for parquet flooring and cut it to fit the room. Lay the underlayment down over the tiles and secure it with adhesive tape.

Step 4: Laying the Parquet Flooring

Start laying the parquet flooring in a corner of the room and work your way out. Apply a thin layer of flooring adhesive to the back of each plank and place it firmly on the underlayment. Use a rubber mallet or tapping block to ensure the planks are securely fitted together.

Step 5: Cutting and Fitting

As you reach the edges of the room, you may need to cut the planks to fit. Use a miter saw or a jigsaw to make precise cuts. Fit the cut planks into place tightly against the walls or baseboards.

Step 6: Expansion Gap

Allow a 5-7mm expansion gap around the perimeter of the room to accommodate for expansion and contraction of the flooring. Use spacers to maintain the gap consistently.

Step 7: Sanding and Finishing

Once the parquet flooring is laid, it's time to sand it down to create a smooth surface. Use an orbital sander with sandpaper of increasing grits (60, 80, 120). After sanding, apply a sealant or finish of your choice to protect the flooring.

Conclusion

Laying parquet flooring on tiles requires careful preparation, precision, and attention to detail. By following these steps and using high-quality materials, you can achieve a beautiful and durable floor that will enhance the look of your space for years to come.
