Laying Parquet Flooring on Concrete: A Comprehensive Guide
Parquet flooring is a classic and elegant choice that adds warmth and sophistication to any space. While it's typically installed over plywood or subflooring, it's also possible to lay parquet flooring directly on concrete. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you achieve a flawless installation:
Preparing the Concrete Surface
The key to a successful parquet installation is ensuring that the concrete surface is properly prepared. Begin by cleaning it thoroughly to remove any dirt, dust, or debris. Next, check for moisture levels using a moisture meter. Concrete should have a relative humidity below 75% before installing flooring.
If the concrete is uneven or has imperfections, it may require leveling or filling. Use a self-leveling compound to smooth out any uneven areas, and fill cracks or holes with patching compound.
Installing Moisture Barrier and Underlayment
To protect the parquet flooring from moisture, install a moisture barrier over the concrete. This can be a plastic sheeting or a roll-out membrane. Over the moisture barrier, lay down an underlayment. This will provide soundproofing, cushioning, and additional moisture protection.
Choosing and Installing the Parquet Flooring
Select parquet flooring that is specifically designed for concrete installations. These floors will have a backing that adheres to the concrete and prevents moisture penetration.
Begin installing the parquet flooring in a corner of the room. Apply a generous amount of adhesive to the back of each plank and carefully lay it in place. Use a tapping block and mallet to ensure the planks are firmly seated. Continue this process until the entire floor is covered.
Grouting and Finishing
Once the parquet flooring is installed, it will need to be grouted. Mix grout according to the manufacturer's instructions and apply it to the joints between the planks using a grout float. Wipe away any excess grout before it dries.
Finally, seal the parquet flooring with a polyurethane finish. This will protect it from moisture, scratches, and wear and tear. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the floor.
