Laying Linoleum Flooring: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing linoleum flooring is a cost-effective and versatile option that can transform the look of any room. With its durability, ease of maintenance, and wide range of styles, it's an excellent choice for both residential and commercial spaces.

Surface Preparation

Before installing linoleum, the subfloor must be smooth, level, and free of moisture. Remove any existing flooring, clean the surface thoroughly, and make sure it's dry.

Layout

Determine the direction of the linoleum pattern and measure the area to calculate the amount of material required. Lay out the tiles or sheets temporarily to visualize the design and ensure a proper fit.

Adhesive Application

Using the notched trowel, apply a thin layer of adhesive to the subfloor, following the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid applying too much adhesive, as this can cause the linoleum to buckle.

Linoleum Installation

Carefully place the linoleum tiles or sheets onto the adhesive, ensuring they are properly aligned. Press down firmly to create a strong bond. Use a straight edge and utility knife to trim any excess material around the edges.

Seam Smoothing

To create a seamless finish, apply adhesive to the seams and press them together. Use a roller to smooth out any ridges or air bubbles. Allow the adhesive to cure completely before walking on the flooring.

Finishing Touches

Once the adhesive has set, install any necessary moldings or baseboards around the perimeter of the room to conceal the edges of the linoleum. Clean the floor with a damp mop and allow it to dry completely before replacing furniture.

Maintenance

Linoleum flooring requires minimal maintenance. Regular sweeping or vacuuming will remove dirt and debris. For tougher stains, use a mild cleaning solution and avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the material.
