Laying Laminate Flooring on Cement Floor: A Comprehensive Guide

Transforming your cement floor with laminate flooring can elevate the aesthetics and functionality of your space. However, to ensure a successful installation, it's vital to adhere to specific preparation and laying techniques.

1. Surface Preparation

Prior to laying laminate flooring, the cement floor must be meticulously prepared to ensure a level and stable surface. Remove any existing floor coverings and thoroughly clean the floor to eliminate dirt, debris, and any adhesive residue. Additionally, it's crucial to check for moisture using a moisture meter. If moisture levels exceed 12%, a moisture barrier should be installed underneath the laminate flooring.

2. Leveling the Floor

Unevenness in the cement floor can lead to buckling and warping of the laminate flooring. To achieve a level surface, use a leveling compound to fill any depressions or gaps. Apply the compound in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry completely before applying the next. Once the leveling compound has cured, sand any high spots to ensure a smooth and even subfloor.

3. Underlayment Installation

An underlayment is crucial for providing a cushion for the laminate flooring, reducing noise and improving its longevity. Select an underlayment specifically designed for cement floors and install it over the leveled cement floor. Extend the underlayment to cover the entire surface, ensuring that all joints are properly overlapped and taped.

4. Laminate Flooring Installation

Start laying the laminate flooring from a corner of the room, ensuring that the planks run parallel to the longest wall. Angle the first plank slightly and fit the locking edge into the grooved edge of the second plank. Continue this process, tapping each plank into place using a tapping block and hammer. Use spacers to maintain uniform gaps between the flooring and walls.

5. Cutting and Fitting

When reaching obstructions such as doorways or corners, it will be necessary to cut the laminate flooring. Measure the gap and transfer the measurements to the plank. Use a laminate cutter or jigsaw to make precise cuts. Ensure that the cut edges face away from areas of high traffic to minimize visibility of the joins.

6. Final Touches

After installing all the laminate flooring, remove the spacers and install moldings or baseboards around the perimeter to conceal any gaps and provide a finished look. Allow the flooring to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours before subjecting it to heavy use.

By following these essential aspects, you can successfully lay laminate flooring on a cement floor, creating a stunning and durable surface that will enhance your space for years to come.
