Laying Laminate Flooring On An Uneven Floor

Laminate flooring is a popular choice for homeowners because it is durable, affordable, and easy to install. However, if your subfloor is uneven, you may need to take some extra steps to ensure that your laminate flooring is installed properly.

The first step is to level the subfloor. This can be done by using a self-leveling compound or by installing a layer of plywood over the subfloor. If you are using a self-leveling compound, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. If you are installing plywood, use a 1/4-inch thick plywood and screw it into the subfloor every 6 inches.

Once the subfloor is level, you can begin installing the laminate flooring. Start by laying out the first row of planks along one wall. Be sure to leave a 1/4-inch gap between the planks and the wall. Use a spacer to help you maintain the gap. Once the first row is in place, you can continue laying the planks, staggering the joints as you go. Use a hammer and tapping block to tap the planks into place.

When you reach a doorway or other obstruction, you will need to cut the planks to fit. To do this, measure the distance from the wall to the obstruction and mark it on the plank. Then, use a miter saw to cut the plank at a 45-degree angle. Be sure to cut the plank on the correct side so that the mitered edge will be facing the wall.

Once all of the planks are in place, you can install the baseboards. Baseboards will help to hide the gap between the flooring and the wall and will give your floor a finished look. To install the baseboards, use a nail gun to nail them into the wall. Be sure to countersink the nails so that they are flush with the surface of the baseboard.
