Laying Engineered Wood Flooring Over Tiles: The Essentials

Upgrading your flooring from tiles to engineered wood can transform the look and feel of your home. Engineered wood offers the warmth and beauty of natural hardwood with the added durability and ease of maintenance. However, installing engineered wood flooring over tiles requires careful preparation and proper installation techniques to ensure a successful and long-lasting result.

1. Surface Preparation

The tiles must be clean, dry, and level. Remove any existing grout, dirt, or debris by scrubbing the surface with a degreaser or tile cleaner. Ensure the tiles are completely dry before proceeding.

If the tiles are not level, use a self-leveling compound to create a smooth and even surface. This will prevent the engineered wood flooring from creaking or buckling over time.

2. Underlayment Installation

Lay down an underlayment over the tiles to provide cushioning, sound insulation, and moisture protection. Choose an underlayment specifically designed for engineered wood flooring and be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.

3. Flooring Installation

Start by cutting the engineered wood planks to the desired length and width. Use a sharp saw or a miter saw for precise cuts. Stagger the joints of the planks to ensure a strong and durable floor.

Secure the engineered wood flooring using either glue or a floating installation method. For glue-down applications, apply adhesive to the underlayment and press the planks into place. For floating installations, use a locking system to connect the planks together without the need for glue.

4. Trimming and Finishing

Once the flooring is installed, trim around the edges using a saw or a router. Install baseboards or moldings to cover the expansion gaps and give the floor a finished look.

Allow the engineered wood flooring to acclimate to the environment for at least 48 hours before walking on it. This will allow the wood to adjust to its new surroundings and minimize any potential movement or warping.

Additional Tips

Use a vapor barrier under the underlayment if the tiles are located below grade or in areas prone to moisture.

Consider using a soundproofing underlayment for added noise reduction.

Seal the flooring with a protective finish to protect it from spills and wear and tear.

Regularly clean and maintain the engineered wood flooring to keep it looking its best for years to come.
