Essential Aspects of Laminate Plank Flooring Installation

Laminate plank flooring is a popular choice for homeowners due to its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. However, it is important to follow the proper installation techniques to ensure a long-lasting and beautiful floor.

1. Site Preparation

Before beginning installation, the subfloor must be level, smooth, and dry. Remove any existing flooring or carpet and check for any unevenness using a straight edge. If necessary, level the subfloor using self-leveling compound or a floor leveling kit.

2. Moisture Barrier

A moisture barrier is essential to prevent moisture from penetrating the subfloor and damaging the laminate flooring. Roll out a plastic moisture barrier over the entire subfloor and overlap the seams by at least 6 inches.

3. Underlayment

Underlayment provides additional cushioning and soundproofing. Choose an underlayment that is specifically designed for laminate plank flooring. Roll out the underlayment over the moisture barrier and stagger the seams.

4. Start from a Straight Wall

Start installing the planks from the longest and straightest wall in the room. Measure and mark a chalk line or laser line parallel to the wall to ensure a straight first row.

5. Tongue-and-Groove System

Laminate planks have a tongue-and-groove system that allows them to be easily clicked together. Align the tongue of one plank with the groove of the adjacent plank and gently tap them together using a rubber mallet or tapping block.

6. End Joints

When reaching the end of a row, measure and cut the last plank to fit. The end joint should be located at least 6 inches away from the end joint of the previous row to prevent weak spots in the flooring.

7. Expansion Gaps

It is important to leave expansion gaps around the perimeter of the flooring to allow for movement due to changes in temperature and humidity. Insert spacers between the walls and the planks to maintain a gap of about 1/4 inch.

8. Transitions and Thresholds

If the flooring transitions into other flooring types, such as carpet or tile, use transition strips or thresholds to create a smooth and seamless transition.

9. Finishing Touches

Once the flooring is installed, remove the spacers and install baseboards or quarter rounds around the perimeter to cover the expansion gaps and enhance the finished look.

10. Maintenance

To maintain the beauty and longevity of your laminate plank flooring, sweep or vacuum regularly and use a damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the finish.

By following these essential aspects, you can successfully install laminate plank flooring in your home, creating a durable, beautiful, and low-maintenance flooring solution.
