Installing Vinyl Sheet Flooring Over Plywood

Installing vinyl sheet flooring over plywood is a popular home improvement project due to its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. Here are the essential aspects of undertaking this task successfully:

1. Preparing the Plywood Subfloor

Ensuring a smooth and level subfloor is crucial. Sand down any uneven areas, fill gaps with wood filler, and secure any loose panels with screws. Plywood should be at least 1/2 inch thick and have a moisture content of less than 12%. It's advisable to apply a layer of self-leveling compound for a perfectly flat surface.

2. Installing Underlayment

Underlayment provides cushioning, moisture resistance, and sound absorption. Choose underlayment specifically designed for vinyl sheet flooring, typically available in rolls or sheets. Overlap the edges by a few inches and secure them with tape or staples.

3. Laying the Vinyl Flooring

Starting from the center of the room, unroll the vinyl flooring and carefully spread it over the underlayment. Use a sharp utility knife or razor blade to cut around walls, corners, and obstacles. Leave a small gap around the edges to allow for expansion and contraction.

4. Adhering the Vinyl Flooring

Apply a layer of vinyl adhesive to the subfloor using a notched trowel. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for adhesive coverage and open time. Place the vinyl flooring onto the adhesive and smooth it out using a wide roller to eliminate any air bubbles.

5. Trimming and Seaming

After the adhesive has set, trim the excess vinyl flooring around the edges with a sharp knife. Use vinyl welding tape or adhesive strips to join seams between pieces of flooring, ensuring a seamless and secure connection.

6. Finishing Touches

Install transition strips where different flooring materials meet. This helps create a smooth transition and prevents moisture damage. You can also add baseboards around the perimeter of the room to conceal the expansion gap and enhance the aesthetic appeal.

Additional Tips

Allow the adhesive to cure completely before walking or placing furniture on the floor.

Use a level and measuring tape throughout the installation process to ensure accuracy.

Consider using a flooring roller for optimum adhesion and to remove any trapped air.

Avoid sliding heavy objects directly on the vinyl flooring to prevent scratches or tears.
