Installing Laminate Flooring Under Door Trim

Installing laminate flooring is a relatively straightforward process, but it can be a little tricky if you have to work around door trim. In this article, we'll show you how to install laminate flooring under door trim the right way, so you can get a professional-looking finish.

Tools and Materials You'll Need

  • Laminate flooring
  • Underlayment
  • Door trim
  • Miter saw
  • Circular saw
  • Table saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Caulk gun
  • Caulk
  • Hammer
  • Nail set

Step 1: Remove the Door Trim

The first step is to remove the door trim. To do this, use a pry bar to carefully pry the trim away from the wall. Be careful not to damage the trim or the wall.

Step 2: Install the Underlayment

Once the door trim is removed, you can install the underlayment. Underlayment is a thin layer of material that goes under the laminate flooring. It helps to protect the flooring from moisture and it also provides a cushion. To install the underlayment, simply roll it out over the subfloor and tape the seams together.

Step 3: Install the Laminate Flooring

Now you can install the laminate flooring. Start by cutting the first piece of flooring to the desired length. To do this, use a miter saw to cut a 45-degree angle on one end of the plank. Then, use a circular saw to cut the plank to the desired length. Once the first plank is cut, you can simply snap it into place.

Continue installing the laminate flooring, one plank at a time. Be sure to stagger the joints between the planks. To do this, cut the first plank in the second row to half its length. This will help to create a more natural look.

Step 4: Install the Door Trim

Once the laminate flooring is installed, you can re-install the door trim. To do this, use a miter saw to cut a 45-degree angle on the top and bottom of the trim. Then, use a nail gun to nail the trim into place.

Step 5: Caulk the Gaps

The final step is to caulk the gaps between the laminate flooring and the door trim. To do this, use a caulk gun to apply a bead of caulk around the perimeter of the trim. Smooth the caulk with your finger or a caulk tool. This will help to seal the gaps and prevent moisture from getting under the flooring.

That's it! You've now successfully installed laminate flooring under door trim. By following these steps, you can ensure a professional-looking finish that will last for years to come.
