Installing Hardwood Flooring on Stairs: A Step-by-Step Guide

Materials You'll Need

To install hardwood flooring on stairs, you will need the following materials:

  • Hardwood flooring
  • Stair treads
  • Stair risers
  • Stair nosing
  • Construction adhesive
  • Nails
  • Hammer or nail gun
  • Saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Polyurethane

Step 1: Preparation

Before you begin installing the hardwood flooring, you need to prepare the stairs.

  • Remove any existing flooring.
  • Clean the stairs thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner and a damp mop.
  • Repair any damaged stairs with wood filler.
  • Sand the stairs to smooth out the surface.
  • Apply a coat of primer to the stairs.
  • Step 2: Install the Stair Treads

    Once the stairs are prepared, you can begin installing the stair treads.

  • Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the back of the stair tread.
  • Place the stair tread on the step.
  • Nail the stair tread into place.
  • Step 3: Install the Stair Risers

  • Place the stair riser on the step.
  • Nail the stair riser into place.
  • Step 4: Install the Stair Nosing

  • Cut the stair nosing to the length of the stair tread.
  • Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the back of the stair nosing.
  • Place the stair nosing on the edge of the stair tread.
  • Nail the stair nosing into place.
  • Step 5: Sand and Finish

    Once the hardwood flooring is installed, you need to sand and finish it.

  • Sand the hardwood flooring with a sanding block or electric sander.
  • Apply a coat of polyurethane to the hardwood flooring.
  • Allow the polyurethane to dry completely.
