Installing Laminate Flooring Over Wood Subfloor: A Comprehensive Guide

Laminate flooring is a popular choice for its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. If you have an existing wood subfloor, you can install laminate flooring directly over it, provided that the subfloor meets certain requirements.

Here's a step-by-step guide to installing laminate flooring over a wood subfloor:

1. Prepare the Subfloor

The first step is to prepare the subfloor by ensuring it is level, flat, dry, and free of any damage. Uneven floors can cause laminate flooring to buckle or crack, so it's important to level them using a self-leveling compound or by sanding them down.

Remove any existing baseboards, quarter-rounds, or other moldings. Clean the subfloor thoroughly to remove any debris, dust, or dirt.

2. Install an Underlayment

An underlayment provides a layer of cushioning and moisture protection between the subfloor and the laminate flooring. Choose an underlayment that is appropriate for your specific subfloor and flooring type. Most underlayments come in rolls or panels and can be installed quickly by rolling them out or snapping them together.

3. Lay Out the Laminate Flooring

Before starting the installation, lay out the laminate flooring to determine the best starting point. The first row should be parallel to the longest wall of the room. Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the room to allow for movement.

4. Install the First Row

Start by tapping the first two planks together along the long edge, using a tapping block and hammer. Continue tapping planks together until you reach the end of the row. Cut the last plank to fit and tap it into place.

5. Continue Installing the Rows

Repeat the process for each subsequent row, staggering the joints from row to row. Use a spacer to ensure even spacing between planks. When you reach an obstruction, such as a doorway or closet, cut the planks to size and fit them around the obstacle.

6. Install the Moldings

Once the laminate flooring is installed, reinstall the baseboards, quarter-rounds, or other moldings. Use a nail gun or a hammer and finishing nails to secure the moldings in place.

7. Care and Maintenance

Laminate flooring is relatively easy to maintain. Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dust and dirt. Clean spills immediately using a damp mop and a mild cleaning solution. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or excess water.
