Installing Hardwood Flooring Over Particle Board

Installing hardwood flooring over particle board can enhance the aesthetics and value of your home. However, to achieve a durable and long-lasting installation, it's crucial to follow the proper steps and ensure the particle board meets specific requirements.

Particle Board Subfloor Requirements:

Thickness: The particle board should be at least 5/8 inches thick to provide adequate support for the hardwood flooring.
Moisture Content: The moisture content of the particle board should be 6-12%. Higher moisture levels can cause buckling or warping of the hardwood flooring.
Flatness: The particle board surface should be flat within 1/8 inch over a 10-foot span to prevent unevenness in the hardwood flooring.

Preparation:

Acclimatize Hardwood Flooring: Unpack the hardwood flooring and let it acclimatize to the room temperature and humidity levels for several days before installation.
Inspect Particle Board: Inspect the particle board for any imperfections, such as cracks, gaps, or uneven surfaces. Address any issues before installing the hardwood flooring.
Install Underlayment: Apply an underlayment to the particle board to provide a moisture barrier, improve sound insulation, and enhance comfort underfoot.

Installation:

Lay Out Hardwood Flooring: Dry-fit the hardwood flooring to determine the best layout and to ensure there are no damaged or misshapen planks.
Apply Glue: Apply a thin layer of flooring adhesive to the underlayment according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Lay Down Hardwood Flooring: Carefully place the hardwood flooring planks on the adhesive, starting from the edge of the room and working your way in.
Use Spacers: Use spacers around the perimeter of the room to maintain an even gap between the hardwood flooring and the walls.
Secure Planks: Use a flooring nailer or hammer and tapping block to secure the hardwood flooring planks together.

Finishing:

Remove Spacers: Once the hardwood flooring is installed, remove the spacers around the perimeter.
Transition Moldings: Install transition moldings between the hardwood flooring and any other flooring surfaces, such as tile or carpet.
Seal and Protect: Apply a protective finish, such as polyurethane or lacquer, to seal and protect the hardwood flooring from moisture and wear.
