How to Replace a Piece of Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is a popular choice for homes and businesses due to its durability, ease of installation, and affordability. However, even the most durable flooring can experience damage over time. If you need to replace a damaged piece of laminate flooring, follow these steps:
Materials You'll Need:
- Replacement laminate flooring plank
- Laminate flooring pull bar
- Hammer
- Pry bar
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Utility knife
Step 1: Remove the damaged plank
To begin, carefully inspect the damaged area to identify the affected plank. Measure and mark the width of the plank on each side of the damage. Using the pull bar and hammer, gently pry up the damaged plank from the short end.
Step 2: Prepare the replacement plank
Measure and cut the replacement plank to the same size as the damaged one. Use a utility knife to trim any excess material from the edges. The replacement plank should fit snugly into the space left by the damaged one.
Step 3: Install the replacement plank
Apply adhesive to the bottom lip of the replacement plank. Carefully insert the plank into the space and gently tap it down using a hammer until it is flush with the surrounding planks. Make sure the edges are fully seated.
Step 4: Tap down the new plank
Using the pull bar, apply pressure to the short ends of the new plank to lock it into place. When properly installed, there should be no gaps or unevenness.
Step 5: Remove excess adhesive
Once the new plank is secured, wipe away any excess adhesive that has squeezed out using a damp cloth. This will prevent the adhesive from drying and becoming visible.
Tips:
- When selecting a replacement plank, ensure it matches the shade, texture, and finish of your existing flooring.
- If possible, purchase a few extra planks to keep on hand for future repairs.
- Be careful not to damage the surrounding planks during the removal or installation process.
- If the flooring has been installed for several years, the color of the replacement plank may differ slightly due to fading or wear.
