How to Install Laminate Flooring on Stair Landings

Installing laminate flooring on stair landings can add a touch of style and durability to your home. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get the job done right.

1. Preparation

Remove all existing floor coverings and trim. Clean the subfloor thoroughly and make sure it is level. Install underlayment to provide a moisture barrier and cushioning.

2. Measure and Cut

Measure the length and width of the landing and cut the laminate planks to fit. Use a miter saw or a utility knife to cut the planks at a 45-degree angle for the nosing.

3. Install the Nosing

Apply a thin line of construction adhesive to the top edge of the stair tread. Place the nosing over the adhesive and press firmly into place. Secure the nosing using nails or screws.

4. Install the First Plank

Apply a thin line of adhesive to the back of the first plank. Position the plank next to the nosing and tap it into place using a tapping block and hammer. Use spacers to ensure even spacing between the planks.

5. Continue Installing Planks

Continue installing laminate planks one by one, interlocking the tongues and grooves. Use a tapping block and hammer to secure the planks together.

6. Cut Around Obstacles

If you encounter any obstacles, such as posts or banisters, measure and cut the planks to fit around them. Use a jigsaw or a utility knife to make intricate cuts.

7. Install Baseboards and Trim

Once the laminate flooring is installed, install baseboards and trim to cover the edges and transition to other flooring surfaces.
