How To Lay Wood Flooring Over Cement
Transforming a concrete subfloor into a warm and inviting wood floor is a rewarding home improvement project that can enhance both the aesthetics and comfort of your space. While the process may seem daunting, it's more manageable than you might think. Let's dive into the essential aspects of laying wood flooring over cement and guide you through each step.
1. Preparing the Cement Subfloor
A stable and smooth subfloor is crucial for successful wood flooring installation. Start by cleaning the cement thoroughly, removing any debris, dirt, or stains. Check for any cracks or holes and repair them using a concrete patch or self-leveling compound. Ensure the subfloor is level within 1/8 inch over 10 feet, using a level to check. If necessary, use a grinder or concrete leveler to smooth out any uneven areas.
2. Installing a Moisture Barrier
Moisture is the enemy of wood flooring, so a moisture barrier is essential to prevent moisture from seeping up from the cement and damaging the wood. Install a polyethylene vapor barrier, with an overlap of at least 6 inches at all edges and seams. Use tape to seal the overlaps and create a moisture-proof barrier.
3. Choosing and Installing an Underlayment
An underlayment provides cushioning and insulation, reducing noise and improving the feel underfoot. Choose an underlayment specifically designed for concrete subfloors, such as foam, cork, or rubber. Roll out the underlayment over the moisture barrier, starting in a corner and overlapping the edges. Secure the underlayment using tape or staples to prevent it from shifting.
4. Selecting and Installing the Wood Flooring
With the subfloor prepared, it's time to choose and install the wood flooring. Consider factors such as species, color, and finish to complement your space. Laminate, engineered wood, and solid wood are common options for installing over cement. Start the installation by laying the first plank in a corner, leaving a small gap between the edge of the plank and the wall. Continue laying the planks, following the manufacturer's instructions and staggering the joints. Secure the planks using nails or adhesive as required.
5. Finishing Touches
Once the wood flooring is installed, it's essential to protect and enhance its appearance. Install baseboards or quarter-round molding around the perimeter to cover the expansion gap and finish the edges. Apply a sealant or polyurethane finish to protect the wood from wear and tear, enhancing its durability and shine. Allow ample time for the finish to dry and cure before using the flooring.
