Laying Engineered Wood Flooring on Concrete: A Comprehensive Guide

Engineered wood flooring offers a durable and visually appealing alternative to traditional hardwood flooring. While it can be installed over various subfloors, concrete presents unique challenges that require specific preparation and installation techniques.

To ensure a successful installation, follow the steps outlined below:

1. Moisture Control

Concrete subfloors are prone to moisture, which can damage engineered wood flooring. Before laying the flooring, it's crucial to measure the moisture content of the concrete using a moisture meter. Ideal moisture levels for engineered wood flooring range from 2.5 to 5%. If the moisture levels exceed 5%, you'll need to install a moisture barrier, such as a polyethylene sheeting.

2. Flattening the Surface

Concrete subfloors can have uneven surfaces and height variations. Before installing the flooring, grind or sand the surface to create a level and smooth base. Any unevenness can lead to buckling or gaps in the flooring.

3. Installing an Underlayment

An underlayment provides cushioning, insulation, and soundproofing between the concrete subfloor and the engineered wood flooring. Choose an underlayment specifically designed for concrete subfloors, such as foam or cork. Roll out the underlayment according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring there are no gaps or overlaps.

4. Laying the Flooring

Start laying the engineered wood flooring from the longest wall of the room. Use a spacer to maintain a 1/4-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the room. This gap will allow for expansion and contraction of the flooring with temperature and humidity changes.

Lock or nail the flooring planks together according to the manufacturer's specifications. Use a tapping block and a rubber mallet to avoid damaging the planks. Offset the end joints of each row by at least 6 inches to ensure stability.

5. Finishing the Installation

Once the flooring is laid, remove the spacers and install baseboards or moldings around the perimeter of the room. These will hide the expansion gap and provide a finished look to the flooring.

Remember, professional installation is highly recommended for engineered wood flooring on concrete to ensure a durable and lasting floor.
