How to Install Wood Flooring on Slab Concrete

Installing wood flooring on slab concrete is a rewarding home improvement project that can transform the look and feel of your space. While it may seem like a daunting task, it's вполне manageable with the right preparation and materials. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you achieve professional-looking results:

1. Prepare the Concrete Subfloor

Start by ensuring the concrete subfloor is level, smooth, and dry. Fill any cracks or holes with a cement-based patch. Grind down any uneven areas to create a flat surface. Use a moisture meter to test humidity levels; they should be below 12% for wood flooring installation.

2. Install a Vapor Barrier

A vapor barrier is crucial to prevent moisture from rising from the concrete into the wood flooring. Roll out a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier over the entire subfloor, overlapping the edges by 6 inches. Seal the seams with vapor barrier tape.

3. Choose and Install Underlayment

Underlayment provides a cushion between the concrete and wood flooring, reducing noise and improving comfort. Select an underlayment that's compatible with your wood flooring and concrete subfloor. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.

4. Acclimate the Wood Flooring

Before installing, allow the wood flooring to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 72 hours. This helps to prevent buckling or warping later.

5. Plan the Layout

Determine the starting point for your flooring installation, keeping in mind the room's shape and the direction of natural light. Measure and mark chalk lines to guide your work.

6. Install the First Row

Apply a thin layer of wood flooring adhesive to the subfloor along the marked starting line. Place the first plank along the chalk line and tap it into place with a rubber mallet and tapping block. Ensure each plank is tightly fit against the previous one.

7. Continue Laying the Planks

Spread adhesive onto the subfloor in small sections and continue laying the planks. Use a spacer to maintain consistent spacing between planks. Stagger the end joints of the planks by at least 6 inches.

8. Trim and Fit Planks

As you reach walls, doorways, or other obstacles, cut the planks to size using a circular saw or miter saw. Use a pry bar to gently fit the cut planks into place.

9. Glue and Nail

Once the flooring is laid, apply a thin bead of wood flooring adhesive along the tongue and groove of each plank. Use a nailer to drive flooring nails at a 45-degree angle through the tongue into the subfloor.

10. Finish and Enjoy

Allow the adhesive to dry completely, usually 24-48 hours. Remove any excess adhesive and trim the excess underlayment around the edges. Install baseboards or quarter-round to cover the expansion gap and enhance the finished look. Enjoy your newly installed wood flooring!
