Laminate Flooring Installation Under a Toilet: A Comprehensive Guide

Installing laminate flooring under a toilet can be a challenging task, but with the right tools and knowledge, it is entirely possible. This guide will provide step-by-step instructions on how to complete this project successfully.

Step 1: Remove the Toilet

Begin by turning off the water supply to the toilet and flushing the remaining water. Disconnect the supply line and unbolt the toilet from the floor. Carefully lift the toilet and set it aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Subfloor

Remove any existing flooring or underlayment from the area where the toilet was located. Ensure that the subfloor is level and smooth by sanding or leveling it if necessary. Install a layer of underlayment over the subfloor to provide a cushion and soundproofing.

Step 3: Cut the Laminate Flooring

Measure and cut the laminate flooring planks to fit around the toilet flange. Use a jigsaw or circular saw to make precise cuts. If the flange is not perfectly centered, you may need to make small adjustments to the cuts.

Step 4: Install the Laminate Flooring

Start by installing the laminate flooring planks around the edges of the room. Work your way towards the toilet flange, cutting and fitting the planks as you go. Use a tapping block and hammer to lock the planks together securely.

Step 5: Create a Hole for the Toilet Flange

Once the laminate flooring is in place, you need to create a hole for the toilet flange. Use a drill or hole saw to cut a hole slightly larger than the diameter of the flange. Align the flange over the hole and secure it to the subfloor.

Step 6: Install the Toilet

Replace the toilet on top of the flange and bolt it securely into place. Reconnect the water supply line and tighten the nuts. Caulk around the base of the toilet to prevent leaks.

Tips:

  • Use a moisture barrier underlayment to protect the laminate flooring from water damage.
  • Leave a small gap between the laminate flooring and the toilet base to allow for expansion and contraction.
  • If you are unsure about any aspect of the installation, consult a professional.
  • Allow the laminate flooring to acclimate to the room for 24-48 hours before installing it.
  • Always wear gloves and safety glasses when working with power tools.
