How To Install Laminate Flooring On Stairs With Railing

Installing laminate flooring on stairs with railings can be a challenging but rewarding project. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that will add beauty and value to your home.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

  • Laminate flooring
  • Underlayment
  • Stair nosing
  • Miter saw
  • Circular saw
  • Hammer
  • Nail gun
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask

Step 1: Prepare the Stairs

Remove any existing flooring from the stairs. Then, inspect the stairs for any damaged or uneven areas. If necessary, level the stairs using a self-leveling compound.

Step 2: Install the Underlayment

Cut the underlayment to fit the stairs. Start at the bottom of the stairs and work your way up. Overlap the underlayment slightly at the seams.

Step 3: Cut the Laminate Flooring

Measure the length of each stair tread and cut the laminate flooring planks accordingly. Use a miter saw to cut the planks at a 45-degree angle for the inside corners and a 90-degree angle for the outside corners.

Step 4: Install the First Row of Planks

Start at the bottom of the stairs and install the first row of planks. Use a hammer and nail gun to secure the planks to the underlayment. Leave a small gap between the planks and the wall for expansion.

Step 5: Install the Stair Nosing

Cut the stair nosing to fit the width of the stairs. Apply construction adhesive to the back of the stair nosing and press it into place over the edge of the laminate flooring planks.

Step 6: Continue Installing the Planks

Continue installing the laminate flooring planks by working your way up the stairs. Stagger the joints between the planks for a more natural look.

Step 7: Cut the Planks for the Railing

Measure the distance between the railing and the edge of the stairs. Cut the laminate flooring planks to fit this distance.

Step 8: Install the Planks for the Railing

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the planks and press them into place against the railing.

Step 9: Finish the Installation

Once all of the laminate flooring planks are installed, use a floor roller to press down on the planks and ensure that they are securely fastened.

Tips for Success

  • Always wear safety glasses and a dust mask when working with laminate flooring.
  • Use a sharp miter saw blade to ensure clean cuts.
  • Leave a small gap between the planks and the wall for expansion.
  • Stagger the joints between the planks for a more natural look.
  • Use a floor roller to press down on the planks and ensure that they are securely fastened.
