How to Install Laminate Flooring on Rounded Stairs

Installing laminate flooring on rounded stairs adds a touch of elegance and durability to your home. While the process may seem daunting, it is achievable with careful planning and precise execution. Here is a comprehensive guide to help you navigate this project successfully.

Materials Required

  • Laminate flooring planks
  • Stair tread nosing
  • Laminate flooring underlayment
  • Construction adhesive
  • Transition strips
  • Nail gun and nails
  • Jigsaw
  • Circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Preparation

1. Start by measuring each stair tread and riser. Use a measuring tape to determine the length and width of the treads and the height of the risers.
2. Cut the laminate flooring underlayment to fit each tread and riser. Secure the underlayment with construction adhesive.
3. Cut the laminate flooring planks to fit the treads and risers. Use a jigsaw for rounded cuts and a circular saw for straight cuts.
4. Install the stair tread nosing to the front edge of each tread. Use construction adhesive and nails to secure it.

Installation

5. Apply construction adhesive to the back of the laminate flooring planks for the treads.
6. Place the first plank on the tread, starting from the back edge. Tap it into place with a rubber mallet.
7. Continue installing the planks until the tread is covered. Use a spacer to ensure even gaps between the planks.
8. Repeat steps 5-7 for the remaining treads.
9. Install the laminate flooring planks for the risers. Apply construction adhesive to the back of the planks and place them on the risers. Tap them into place with a rubber mallet.

Finishing Touches

10. Cut the transition strips to fit the edges of the stairs. Use a miter saw to create angled cuts at the corners.
11. Install the transition strips using construction adhesive and nails.
12. Clean the laminate flooring with a damp mop to remove any dust or debris.

Tips for Success

  • Use a sharp jigsaw blade for precise cuts when working with rounded edges.
  • Apply construction adhesive liberally to ensure a strong bond.
  • Use a spacer to create even gaps between the laminate flooring planks.
  • Be patient and take your time, especially when cutting and installing around curved areas.
  • Protect the laminate flooring from damage during installation by using drop cloths and wearing soft shoes.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed laminate flooring on your rounded stairs, adding a beautiful and durable surface to your home.
