How to Install Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is a popular choice for homeowners due to its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. If you're considering installing laminate flooring in your home, here are the essential steps you need to know:

1. Prepare the Subfloor

The subfloor must be level, smooth, and dry before installing laminate flooring. Remove any existing flooring and level the subfloor using a self-leveling compound or plywood underlayment. Ensure the subfloor is clean and free of debris before proceeding.

2. Install an Underlayment

An underlayment provides a moisture barrier and helps to reduce noise and improve comfort. Roll out the underlayment over the subfloor, overlapping the seams and securing them with tape. Trim any excess underlayment around the edges.

3. Install the First Row

Start by installing the first row of planks along the longest wall. Measure and cut the planks to fit the length of the wall, leaving a small gap around the perimeter for expansion. Angle the first plank at a 45-degree angle and tap it into place using a hammer and tapping block. Continue installing planks until the first row is complete.

4. Continue Installing Rows

To install the remaining rows, insert the tongue of the new plank into the groove of the previous row. Angle the plank at a 45-degree angle and tap it into place until it clicks into position. Continue adding planks until you reach the opposite wall.

5. Cut and Install the Last Row

Measure and cut the planks for the last row to fit the length of the wall. Use a spacer or a scrap piece of laminate to ensure the correct gap around the perimeter. Insert the planks and tap them into place.

6. Install Trim and Moldings

Trim and moldings cover the gaps between the flooring and walls or other surfaces. Install baseboards, quarter round, or other moldings as desired. Secure them with nails or screws.

7. Clean and Maintain

Once the flooring is installed, clean it thoroughly with a microfiber mop or vacuum cleaner. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for regular maintenance to ensure the longevity of the flooring.
