How to Lay Laminate Flooring Around Door Frames
Installing laminate flooring can be a DIY-friendly project, but it can get tricky when you encounter obstacles like door frames. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate this challenge:
Materials You'll Need:
- Laminate flooring
- Underlayment (optional)
- Spacer blocks
- Tapping block
- Circular saw or miter saw
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
Step 1: Prepare the Area
Remove the door to give yourself more room to work. Remove any existing flooring and underlayment to expose the subfloor. Ensure the subfloor is level and free of debris.
Step 2: Install Underlayment (Optional)
If desired, lay down underlayment to provide additional sound absorption and support. Start by rolling out the underlayment against one wall and overlap the edges by a few inches.
Step 3: Lay the First Row
Start installing the laminate flooring from the left-hand corner of the room. Place spacer blocks along the walls and insert the first plank against the spacer blocks.
Step 4: Cut Around the Door Frame
Measure the distance between the last plank and the door frame. Transfer the measurement to a laminate plank and cut it accordingly using a circular saw or miter saw.
Step 5: Install the Cut Plank
Fit the cut plank against the door frame and tap it into place using the tapping block. Make sure to align the cut edge flush with the door frame.
Step 6: Continue Laying the Flooring
Continue laying the laminate flooring, following the manufacturer's instructions and using spacer blocks to maintain consistent gaps.
Step 7: Finish the Doorway
When you reach the opposite side of the doorway, cut the last plank to size and install it against the door frame. Ensure the joint is tight and secure.
Step 8: Reinstall the Door
Once the flooring is complete, reinstall the door, ensuring it clears the flooring by about 1/2 inch.
Tips:
- Use a sharp blade for clean cuts.
- Tap the planks together gently to avoid damaging them.
- Measure carefully to minimize waste.
- If the door frame is too low, you may need to use a transition strip.
