Foil Underlay for Laminate Flooring: Which Way Up?
Installing laminate flooring with a foil underlay is a great way to improve the comfort, soundproofing, and moisture resistance of your floor. However, it's important to install the underlay correctly to ensure optimal performance. One of the most important considerations is which way up to install the underlay.
In general, the foil side of the underlay should face up. This is because the foil acts as a vapor barrier, preventing moisture from rising up through the underlay and into the laminate flooring. Moisture can damage laminate flooring, so it's important to keep it away as much as possible.
There are some exceptions to this rule. If you are installing laminate flooring over a radiant heating system, the foil side of the underlay should face down. This will allow the heat from the heating system to pass through the underlay and into the flooring, providing a more comfortable feel underfoot.
Once you have determined which way up to install the underlay, simply follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. Be sure to overlap the seams of the underlay by at least 6 inches and tape them together to create a moisture-proof barrier.
By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your laminate flooring is installed correctly and will provide you with many years of enjoyment.
