Installing Laminate Wood Flooring Over Vinyl: A Step-by-Step Guide

Upgrading your flooring with laminate wood over existing vinyl tiles is a cost-effective and DIY-friendly solution that can transform the look of your home. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you achieve a professional-looking installation:

1. Preparation

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the vinyl floor to remove any dirt, dust, or debris. Ensure the surface is level and smooth, using a floor leveler if necessary. Remove any baseboards or moldings to expose the edges of the vinyl.

2. Moisture Barrier

Installing a plastic moisture barrier beneath the laminate flooring is crucial to prevent moisture damage. Overlap the barrier by at least 6 inches and secure it with tape.

3. Underlayment

Next, lay down a high-quality underlayment over the moisture barrier. This will provide additional soundproofing, cushioning, and moisture protection. Choose an underlayment designed specifically for laminate flooring.

4. Laminate Installation

Starting in a corner of the room, begin laying down the laminate planks. Most laminate flooring features a locking mechanism that allows you to simply click the planks together. Ensure the planks are firmly interlocked and flush with each other.

5. Cutting and Fitting

When you reach walls or obstacles, measure and cut the planks to fit using a laminate cutter. Use spacers to maintain a consistent gap between the planks and the walls. Tap in the cut planks using a tapping block.

7. Reattaching Baseboards

Once the flooring is installed, reattach the baseboards or moldings you removed earlier. Secure them using nails or screws, ensuring they cover the expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.
