How to Install Herringbone Parquet Flooring

Herringbone parquet flooring is a classic and elegant flooring option that can add a touch of sophistication to any room. Installing herringbone parquet flooring requires some skill and attention to detail, but it is a project that can be completed by do-it-yourselfers with a little patience and preparation.

Materials You'll Need

  • Herringbone parquet flooring
  • Underlayment
  • Glue
  • Nails
  • Nail gun
  • Hammer
  • Saw
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk line
  • Level
  • Spacer blocks
  • Polyurethane

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the subfloor: The subfloor should be level, smooth, and dry. If necessary, level the subfloor using a self-leveling compound. Install underlayment on the subfloor to provide a cushion and reduce noise.

2. Lay out the pattern: Determine the center point of the room and snap a chalk line to create a starting point. Lay out the herringbone pattern, starting from the center and working your way out. Use spacer blocks to ensure that the planks are evenly spaced.

3. Glue the planks: Apply glue to the back of each plank and place it in the pattern. Use a hammer and tapping block to gently tap the planks into place. Make sure that the planks are level and tight against each other.

4. Nail the planks: Once the glue has dried, nail the planks into place using a nail gun. Countersink the nails slightly below the surface of the wood.

5. Sand and finish the floor: Once all of the planks are installed, sand the floor to smooth out any unevenness. Apply two coats of polyurethane to protect the floor and give it a beautiful finish.

Tips

  • Use a chalk line or laser level to ensure that the planks are laid out evenly.
  • Start from the center of the room and work your way out to avoid errors.
  • Use a tapping block to gently tap the planks into place without damaging them.
  • Countersink the nails slightly below the surface of the wood to avoid tripping hazards.
  • Apply two coats of polyurethane to protect the floor and give it a beautiful finish.
