How to Put Down Hardwood Flooring: A Comprehensive Guide

Step 1: Preparing the Subfloor

Step 2: Installing the Underlayment

Roll out the underlayment, overlapping the seams slightly. Tape the seams together using duct tape. The underlayment provides cushioning and reduces sound transmission.

Step 3: Laying the Hardwood Planks

Start laying the hardwood planks along one wall, leaving a small gap for expansion. Use a nail gun or hammer to secure the planks to the underlayment. Stagger the joints to prevent aligning them on top of each other.

Step 4: Cutting the Planks

Use a saw to cut the planks to fit around obstacles such as doorways and vents. Measure carefully and ensure the cuts are precise. Secure the cut pieces using nails or adhesive.

Step 5: Installing Baseboard and Molding

Install the baseboard molding around the perimeter of the room, leaving a small gap for expansion. Use nails or a brad nailer to secure it to the wall. Quarter-round molding can be used to cover the gap between the baseboard and the flooring.
