A Comprehensive Guide to Gluing Down Parquet Flooring

Installing parquet flooring can elevate your home's aesthetics and durability. Among the various methods, gluing down the planks offers a secure and permanent bond. Here's a step-by-step guide to successfully glue down parquet flooring:

Preparation

Before commencing, ensure the subfloor is level, clean, and free of debris. Install a moisture barrier to protect the flooring from moisture vapor. It is crucial to acclimate the parquet planks to the room's temperature and humidity for a few days before installation.

Choosing the Right Adhesive

Select a high-quality adhesive specifically designed for parquet flooring to ensure the bond's longevity. Read the manufacturer's instructions carefully to determine the appropriate spread rate and working time.

Applying the Adhesive

Using a notched trowel, apply the adhesive onto the subfloor in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure uniform coverage and avoid applying too much adhesive, which can lead to excess squeeze-out.

Laying the Planks

Start by laying the first plank along a straight edge or chalk line. Firmly press the plank into the adhesive, ensuring good contact. Continue laying the planks row by row, alternating the end joints to create a staggered pattern. Use spacers to maintain consistent gaps between the planks.

Rolling the Floor

Once all the planks are laid, use a heavy roller to press the flooring firmly into the adhesive. This helps remove any air pockets and ensures a strong bond. Work in small sections to avoid damaging the planks.

Excess Adhesive Removal

As you roll the floor, excess adhesive may squeeze out from the joints. Immediately wipe away this excess using a damp cloth. Allow the adhesive to fully set according to the manufacturer's recommended drying time.

Finishing Touches

Once the adhesive is completely dry, you can install baseboards, moldings, or transition strips to conceal any gaps and complete the installation. Protect the flooring from damage during installation by using felt pads or carpet remnants.

Additional Tips

Wear proper safety gear, such as gloves and safety glasses, while gluing down the parquet flooring. Allow ample drying time before walking on or placing furniture on the new flooring. Follow the manufacturer's instructions precisely to ensure a successful and long-lasting installation.
