How to Get Cork Tiles Off the Floor of Your House
Cork tiles are a popular flooring choice due to their durability, comfort, and sound-absorbing qualities. However, when it comes time to replace or repair the tiles, removing them can be a challenge. The adhesive used to install cork tiles is often strong, and the tiles themselves can be fragile. With the right tools and techniques, though, you can get cork tiles off your floor without damaging them or the subfloor.
Tools and Materials You'll Need:
- Utility knife
- Pry bar
- Hammer
- Chisel
- Heat gun or blow dryer
- Putty knife
- Floor scraper
- Solvent
Step 1: Score the Tiles
Use a utility knife to score the tiles around the perimeter of the room and along any seams. This will help weaken the adhesive and make it easier to remove the tiles.
Step 2: Pry Up the Tiles
Insert the pry bar under a loose tile and gently pry it up. If the tile is still stuck, use a hammer to tap the pry bar and loosen the adhesive. Continue prying up the tiles until the entire floor is cleared.
Step 3: Remove the Adhesive
Use a chisel to scrape away any adhesive that remains on the subfloor. Be careful not to damage the subfloor.
Step 4: Heat the Adhesive
If the adhesive is particularly stubborn, you can use a heat gun or blow dryer to soften it. Hold the heat source a few inches away from the adhesive and move it back and forth until the adhesive becomes pliable.
Step 5: Scrape Away the Adhesive
Use a putty knife or floor scraper to scrape away the softened adhesive. Be careful not to damage the subfloor.
Step 6: Clean the Subfloor
Once all of the adhesive has been removed, clean the subfloor with a solvent to remove any remaining residue.
