How to Put In Laminate Flooring: A Comprehensive Guide

Laminate flooring is a popular choice for homeowners due to its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. If you're considering tackling a DIY laminate flooring project, follow these essential steps to ensure a successful outcome.

1. Preparation:

Before laying down the flooring, you'll need to prepare the subfloor. Remove any existing flooring and ensure the subfloor is level and flat. Use a moisture barrier if the subfloor is concrete or below grade. Allow ample time for the moisture barrier to dry.

2. Acclimatization:

Bring the laminate flooring into the room where it will be installed and let it acclimatize to the room temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours before installation. This will prevent the planks from expanding or contracting after installation.

3. Underlayment:

Install an underlayment over the prepared subfloor. This layer provides cushioning, insulation, and helps level out any imperfections in the subfloor. Roll out the underlayment and secure it with tape.

4. Installation:

Start installing the laminate flooring along the longest wall in the room. Use spacers to maintain a consistent gap between the planks and the walls. Interlock the planks together by angling them at a 30-degree angle and pressing down firmly. Continue laying planks row by row, staggering the joints for increased strength.

5. Cutting:

For edges and odd-shaped areas, you'll need to cut the planks. Use a miter saw or a sharp utility knife to make precise cuts. Measure, mark, and cut the planks accordingly.

6. Transitions and Moldings:

If your flooring transitions into other rooms or meets different flooring types, install transition strips or moldings to provide a smooth and seamless transition.

7. Accessories:

Enhance the finished look with necessary accessories, such as baseboards, quarter rounds, and end caps. These accessories cover the expansion gaps and give your flooring a polished, finished appearance.

Tips:

  • Wear gloves to protect your hands.
  • Use a tapping block and a hammer to tap the planks together securely.
  • Leave expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room to allow for movement.
  • Avoid installing laminate flooring in areas with excessive moisture or direct sunlight.
  • Clean the flooring regularly using a damp mop and a laminate floor cleaner.

By following these steps and tips, you can successfully install laminate flooring in your home. This DIY project is not only rewarding but also cost-effective and will enhance the look and feel of your living space for years to come.
