How to Repair Tongue and Groove Flooring

Tongue and groove flooring is a popular choice for homes because it is durable and easy to install. However, over time, even the best flooring can become damaged. If you have tongue and groove flooring that needs to be repaired, there are a few simple steps you can follow to get the job done right.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Tongue and groove flooring
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Nails or screws
  • Wood filler
  • Sandpaper

Step 1: Remove the Damaged Board

The first step is to remove the damaged board. To do this, use a pry bar to carefully pry up the board from the subfloor. Be careful not to damage the surrounding boards.

Step 2: Cut a New Board

Once the damaged board is removed, you will need to cut a new board to replace it. The new board should be the same length and width as the damaged board.

Step 3: Install the New Board

To install the new board, simply slide it into place between the two surrounding boards. Make sure that the tongue of the new board is inserted into the groove of the surrounding boards. Once the new board is in place, use a hammer to nail or screw it down to the subfloor.

Step 4: Fill in the Gaps

Once the new board is installed, you will need to fill in any gaps between the boards. To do this, use wood filler. Apply the wood filler to the gaps and then use a putty knife to smooth it out. Once the wood filler has dried, sand it smooth.

Step 5: Finish the Floor

Once the repairs are complete, you will need to finish the floor. This can be done by applying a sealant or stain. Once the finish has dried, your tongue and groove flooring will be repaired and looking like new.
