Laying Hardwood Flooring Around a Corner: A Comprehensive Guide

Installing hardwood flooring around a corner presents its own unique set of challenges. However, by carefully following these essential steps, you can achieve a seamless and professionally finished look.

Materials and Tools

  • Hardwood flooring
  • Corner molding or reducer strips
  • Table saw (optional)
  • Miter saw
  • Nail gun
  • Brad nailer
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Carpenter's square

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Corner

Determine the angle of the corner using a carpenter's square. Transfer the angle to the last plank of flooring and cut it using a table saw or miter saw.

Step 2: Cut the Corner Molding

Cut two pieces of corner molding to fit the angle of the corner. Miter the ends of each piece at a 45-degree angle using a miter saw.

Step 3: Install the Corner Molding

Place one piece of corner molding in the corner and nail it into place. Secure the other piece of molding to the adjacent wall, leaving a small gap between the molding and the flooring.

Step 4: Install the Reduced Strips

Cut reducer strips to fit the width of the gap between the molding and the flooring. Nail the reducer strips into place, ensuring they are flush with the face of the flooring.

Step 5: Install the Flooring

Continue installing the hardwood flooring planks along the corner. When you reach the corner, cut the planks to fit and secure them with nails. Use a brad nailer to secure the tongues to the grooves of the adjacent planks.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Once the flooring is installed, fill any gaps with wood filler. Sand the filler smooth and apply a sealant or finish to protect the flooring.

Tips

  • Use a high-quality corner molding made of a species that matches the hardwood flooring.
  • Make precise cuts to ensure a tight fit between the corner molding and the flooring.
  • Nail the corner molding and reducer strips into the studs for added strength.
  • Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the flooring planks into place, avoiding damage.
  • Allow the flooring adhesive to dry completely before walking on it.

By following these steps, you can confidently and successfully install hardwood flooring around a corner, creating a stunning and durable addition to your home.
