Installing Vinyl Plank Flooring Over Wood Subfloor: A Comprehensive Guide

Transforming your home with vinyl plank flooring is a rewarding project that offers both style and durability. If you have an existing wood subfloor, installing vinyl planks over it is a relatively straightforward process that can be completed in a weekend. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a stunning and long-lasting floor:

Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor

A smooth and stable surface is crucial for a successful installation. Inspect your wood subfloor for any loose boards, squeaks, or unevenness. Secure loose boards with screws or nails, and fill any gaps with wood filler or wood putty. Ensure the subfloor is level by using a 6-foot level.

Step 2: Choose the Right Vinyl Plank

Consider the room's intended use and traffic when selecting vinyl planks. For areas with heavy traffic, opt for planks with higher traffic ratings. Choose planks with a click-and-lock system for easier installation.

Step 3: Determine the Installation Direction

Determine the direction you want to install the vinyl planks. Most manufacturers recommend installing the planks parallel to the longest wall in the room. This maximizes the flooring's visual appeal and minimizes waste.

Step 4: Start Installing

Begin installing the vinyl planks in a corner of the room. Start by placing a spacer along the wall to ensure a uniform gap between the flooring and the wall. Click the first plank into place, and continue adding planks row by row.

Step 5: Trim the Planks

As you reach the opposite wall, you may need to cut the last plank to fit. Measure the gap between the last plank and the wall, and transfer the measurement to the plank. Use a utility knife or circular saw to cut the plank to size.

Step 6: Finish the Edges

Once all the planks are installed, finish the edges by installing baseboards, moldings, or transition strips. These pieces cover the expansion gap and create a clean and finished look.

Additional Tips:

  • Allow the vinyl planks to acclimate to the room temperature for at least 24 hours before installing.
  • Use a tapping block and a rubber mallet to securely click the planks into place.
  • Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the flooring to allow for expansion and contraction.
  • Clean the floor thoroughly before allowing foot traffic.
By following these steps, you can successfully install vinyl plank flooring over a wood subfloor and enjoy a beautiful and durable floor for years to come.
