How to Lay Laminate Flooring Under a Door Jamb

Laying laminate flooring can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to navigating obstacles like door jambs. However, with the right technique and a few simple steps, you can achieve a seamless and professional-looking installation.

Here's a comprehensive guide on how to lay laminate flooring under a door jamb:

1. Measure and Cut the Jamb

Start by measuring the width of the door jamb where the flooring will be installed. Use a pencil to mark the necessary cut line on the jamb. Next, use a fine-toothed saw to carefully cut along the line, ensuring a clean and straight edge.

2. Remove the Door

For easier access, remove the door from the frame by unscrewing the hinges. This will give you a clear workspace to work with.

3. Insert the Flooring Spacer

Insert a flooring spacer, usually about 1/4 inch thick, under the jamb to create a gap for expansion and contraction of the flooring.

4. Slide the Planks Under the Jamb

Carefully slide the laminate planks under the jamb, keeping them as close to the jamb as possible. Use a tapping block and hammer to gently tap the planks into place.

5. Cut the Excess Flooring

Once the planks are in place, trim any excess flooring that extends beyond the jamb using a jigsaw or utility knife.

6. Secure the Planks

Secure the flooring planks by tapping them together using a tapping block and hammer, ensuring they are level and tightly joined.

7. Install the Door

Once the flooring is laid, rehang the door by attaching it to the hinges. Check the alignment and adjust the hinges if necessary.

8. Fill in the Gap

Finally, fill in the gap between the flooring and the jamb using a sealant or caulk that matches the color of the flooring. This will prevent dirt and debris from accumulating and ensure a clean and seamless finish.

By following these steps, you can successfully lay laminate flooring under a door jamb, creating a professional-looking and durable installation. Remember to measure carefully, cut precisely, and secure the planks properly to ensure a long-lasting and satisfactory result.
