How to Install Vinyl Sheet Flooring Around a Toilet
Installing vinyl sheet flooring around a toilet can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. With the right tools and materials, you can achieve a professional-looking finish without breaking the bank. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process.
Tools and Materials
- Vinyl sheet flooring
- Utility knife
- Straight edge or ruler
- Pencil or marking tool
- Toilet flange
- Flange gasket
- Toilet wax ring
- Toilet
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Remove the Toilet
Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush it to empty the tank. Disconnect the water supply line and remove the nuts holding the toilet to the floor. Carefully lift the toilet off the floor and set it aside.
2. Clean the Floor
Remove any old flooring or adhesive from the area where the toilet will be installed. Clean the floor thoroughly with a damp mop or vacuum cleaner.
3. Install the Toilet Flange
Center the toilet flange over the drain hole in the floor. Apply a thin bead of silicone caulk around the base of the flange and press it into place. Let the caulk dry for several hours before proceeding.
4. Cut the Flooring
Measure the distance from the toilet flange to the edge of the flooring. Transfer this measurement to the vinyl sheet flooring and mark it with a pencil. Use a straight edge or ruler to guide your utility knife as you cut the flooring to size.
5. Install the Flooring
Peel back about 6 inches of the backing from the edge of the flooring. Align the flooring with the toilet flange and press it into place, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles. Continue peeling back the backing and installing the flooring until it reaches the edge of the toilet base.
6. Cut the Hole for the Toilet Base
Use a pencil to trace the outline of the toilet base onto the flooring. Remove the flooring from the area and use a utility knife to cut out the hole.
7. Reinstall the Toilet
Apply a toilet wax ring to the bottom of the toilet base. Carefully lift the toilet and align it with the toilet flange. Lower the toilet onto the flange and press down firmly to create a seal. Reconnect the water supply line and turn on the water supply.
8. Trim the Flooring
Use a utility knife to trim any excess flooring around the base of the toilet. Be careful not to cut too close to the toilet base, as this could damage the flooring.
Tips for Success
- Use a sharp utility knife to ensure clean cuts.
- Be patient and take your time to avoid mistakes.
- If you encounter any problems, don't hesitate to consult a professional.
