Install Vinyl Plank Flooring Without Removing Baseboards
Upgrading your flooring with vinyl planks is a practical and stylish choice that can transform the look of your home. While removing baseboards is often a crucial step in flooring installations, there are ways to install vinyl planks without disrupting your existing baseboards. This article provides a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a professional-looking vinyl plank floor without removing baseboards.
Preparation
Before starting, gather the necessary tools and materials, including vinyl planks, underlayment, utility knife, spacers, and a pry bar. Ensure that the subfloor is clean, level, and dry. If necessary, repair any unevenness or moisture issues.
Install Underlayment
Lay the underlayment over the subfloor, starting from a corner of the room. Overlap the underlayment slightly and secure it with tape or adhesive. Trim any excess underlayment along the edges.
Start Laying Vinyl Planks
Begin laying the vinyl planks in the corner of the room, ensuring the tongue of the plank faces the wall. Slightly angle the plank and insert the tongue into the groove of the underlayment. Tap the plank into place using a tapping block and hammer.
Continue laying the planks row by row, aligning the tongues and grooves. Use spacers to maintain consistent gaps between the planks and the walls.
Trim the Last Row
Measure and mark the last row of planks. Cut the planks to the desired length using a utility knife. Carefully insert the cut planks into place, tapping them gently.
Secure Loose Edges
Once all the planks are installed, use a pry bar or a small nail to secure any loose edges between the planks and the baseboards. Insert the pry bar or nail into the gap and gently tap it to push the edge underneath the baseboard.
Repeat this process along the entire perimeter of the room, ensuring all edges are secured and flush with the baseboards.
Caulk the Edges
For a professional finish, apply a thin bead of clear caulk along the edges of the vinyl plank flooring, where it meets the baseboards. Smooth out the caulk using a damp sponge or cloth.
Allow the caulk to dry completely before walking on the floor.
Enjoy Your New Floor
Congratulations! You have successfully installed vinyl plank flooring without removing the baseboards. Enjoy the updated look and feel of your new flooring.
