How to Install Laminate Flooring over Tiles

Step 1: Preparation

Before you begin, thoroughly clean the tiled floor to remove any dirt or debris. If necessary, repair any damaged tiles using a suitable adhesive. Next, lay down a vapor barrier over the tiles to prevent moisture from seeping into the laminate flooring. This is particularly important if the tiled floor is in a moisture-prone area.

Step 2: Laying the Underlayment

Roll out the underlayment over the vapor barrier, ensuring it covers the entire floor. Use tape to secure the seams and smooth out any wrinkles. The underlayment provides cushioning, reduces noise, and helps level the surface.

Step 3: Installing the Laminate Flooring

Start by determining the direction in which you want to install the flooring. Typically, it's best to install parallel to the longest wall of the room. Measure and cut the first row of planks to fit against the wall, leaving a small gap of approximately 1/4 inch for expansion. Apply a thin bead of adhesive along the tongue of the plank and insert it into the groove of the previous plank. Use a tapping block and hammer to gently tap the planks into place.

Step 4: Continuing the Installation

Continue adding planks, staggering the joints to ensure strength. Use spacers to maintain consistent gaps between the planks and the walls. When you reach the end of a row, measure and cut the last plank to fit. Repeat this process for subsequent rows until the entire floor is covered.
