How to Lay Laminate Flooring in a Bathroom

Laminate flooring is a popular choice for bathrooms due to its durability, water resistance, and easy maintenance. If you're planning to install laminate flooring in your bathroom, here's a step-by-step guide to help you get the job done right:

Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor

The first step is to prepare the subfloor by making sure it's level, flat, and dry. Fill any cracks or holes with a self-leveling compound or patching material. If the subfloor is uneven, you may need to install a leveling compound to smooth it out.

Step 2: Install an Underlayment

An underlayment is a thin layer of material that goes between the subfloor and the laminate flooring. It helps to reduce noise, insulate the floor, and protect the laminate from moisture.

Step 3: Begin Installing the Laminate Flooring

Start installing the laminate flooring in a corner of the room and work your way out. Snap the first plank into place along a wall, then continue adding planks, aligning them end-to-end and tapping them together with a rubber mallet.

Step 4: Install Transition Strips

Transition strips are used to cover the gaps between the laminate flooring and other flooring surfaces, such as tile or carpet. Cut the transition strips to size and install them using glue or nails.

Step 5: Install Baseboards

Baseboards cover the gap between the laminate flooring and the wall. Cut the baseboards to size and install them using nails or construction adhesive.

Step 6: Seal the Floor

To protect the laminate flooring from moisture, apply a sealant to the seams and edges of the floor. Use a silicone-based sealant that's designed for laminate flooring.

Tips for Installing Laminate Flooring in a Bathroom:

  • Use waterproof laminate flooring specifically designed for bathrooms.
  • Install a vapor barrier under the underlayment to prevent moisture from seeping into the subfloor.
  • Allow a 1/4-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the floor to accommodate expansion and contraction.
  • Use a sharp utility knife to cut the laminate flooring and transition strips.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully for the specific type of laminate flooring you're using.
