How to Clean Old, Stained Vinyl Flooring

If you have old, stained vinyl flooring, you don't have to replace it to make it look new again. With a little effort and the right cleaning solutions, you can remove even the toughest stains and restore your floor to its original beauty.

Step 1: Gather Materials

You will need the following materials:

  • Bucket
  • Warm water
  • Mild dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Soft cloths or sponge
  • Microfiber mop

Step 2: Clean the Floor

Fill a bucket with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and wring it out until it is damp. Wipe down the floor, taking care to clean all corners and crevices. Rinse the cloth or sponge frequently in clean water.

Step 3: Remove Tough Stains

If there are any tough stains on the floor, you can try removing them with a mixture of white vinegar and water. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a bowl. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and wring it out until it is damp. Apply the solution to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Wipe the stain away with a clean cloth or sponge. Rinse the area with clean water.

Step 4: Neutralize the Vinegar

Once you have removed all of the stains, it is important to neutralize the vinegar. Mix 1 cup of baking soda in a gallon of warm water. Dip a microfiber mop into the solution and wring it out until it is damp. Mop the floor thoroughly. Rinse the mop frequently in clean water.

Step 5: Dry the Floor

Once you have mopped the floor, use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to dry it completely. This will help to prevent streaks and water spots.

Tips

  • Always test any cleaning solutions on a small, inconspicuous area of the floor before using them on the entire floor.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on vinyl flooring, as these can damage the finish.
  • If you have a large area of flooring to clean, you may want to rent a floor scrubber.
  • Regular cleaning will help to keep your vinyl flooring looking its best.
