How to Lay Laminate Hardwood Flooring on Concrete

Laminate hardwood flooring is a popular choice for homeowners due to its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. If you're planning to install laminate hardwood flooring on concrete, here's a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a professional-looking result:

1. Prepare the Concrete Subfloor: Ensure the concrete subfloor is clean, level, and dry. Remove any debris or existing flooring. Use a concrete leveler to smooth out any uneven areas.

2. Install a Moisture Barrier: To prevent moisture from damaging the flooring, install a vapor barrier over the concrete subfloor. Use 6-mil polyethylene sheeting that overlaps by at least 6 inches at the seams.

3. Lay Down Underlayment: Underlayment provides a cushioned base for the laminate flooring and helps reduce noise. Choose an underlayment that is compatible with laminate flooring and concrete subfloors. Roll out the underlayment perpendicular to the direction of the flooring.

4. Install the Laminate Flooring: Start by laying the first row of planks along a straight wall. Tap the planks together using a tapping block and hammer, ensuring they fit tightly. Continue laying the planks row by row, staggering the end joints for added strength.

5. Cut and Fit the Planks: Use a jigsaw or circular saw to cut the planks to fit around obstacles or walls. Measure accurately and make clean cuts for a seamless appearance.

6. Install Trim and Moldings: Once the flooring is installed, add trim and moldings to cover the expansion gaps around the perimeter and transition to other flooring surfaces. Use quarter round or baseboard moldings as needed.

7. Allow Expansion Gaps: Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the room to allow for movement due to temperature and moisture changes.

8. Maintain the Flooring: Regularly clean the laminate flooring with a microfiber mop and laminate cleaner. Avoid using abrasive materials or excess moisture, as they can damage the surface.

Tips:

  • Use a tapping block and hammer to ensure the planks are locked together tightly.
  • Stagger the end joints of the planks to prevent buckling or warping.
  • Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.
  • Clean the flooring regularly with a microfiber mop and laminate cleaner.
  • Avoid using abrasive materials or excess moisture on the flooring.

By following these steps and tips, you can successfully install laminate hardwood flooring on concrete and enjoy a beautiful, durable, and easy-to-maintain floor in your home.
