Essential Steps for Laying Down Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring offers a cost-effective and stylish alternative to traditional hardwoods. Installing it yourself can save you a considerable amount of money while adding value to your home. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to put down laminate flooring:1. Preparation:
Before you begin, ensure you have the necessary tools and materials. You'll need a tape measure, level, utility knife, tapping block, and laminate flooring underlayment. Start by measuring the room and purchasing enough laminate planks to cover the area with about 5-10% extra for waste.
2. Acclimation:
Laminate planks need to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 24 hours before installation. Remove the planks from the packaging and stack them flat in the room where you'll be installing them.
3. Laying the Underlayment:
Roll out the underlayment in the direction of the planks. Overlap the seams by about 2-3 inches and tape them together. The underlayment will provide cushioning, soundproofing, and moisture protection.
4. Starting the First Row:
Determine the direction in which you want to lay the planks. Measure the distance from the wall to the opposite side of the room, and cut the first plank to fit. Start laying the planks from the left corner, leaving a 1/4-inch gap around the perimeter for expansion.
5. Interlocking the Planks:
Position the next plank against the first one and gently tap it into place using a tapping block. The planks should snap together easily. Continue laying the planks in a row, ensuring they are aligned properly.
6. Staggering the Joints:
To enhance durability, offset the end joints of the planks by at least 6 inches. Cut the last plank of each row to fit and tap it into place.
7. Cutting and Shaping:
For obstacles such as doorways or pipes, measure and cut the planks accordingly. You can use a jigsaw or utility knife for precise cuts and notches.
8. Finishing Touches:
Once the flooring is laid, install baseboards or moldings around the perimeter to hide the expansion gap and give the floor a finished look. Vacuum or sweep the floor thoroughly and enjoy your new laminate flooring.
