How to Measure for Vinyl Flooring
Measuring for vinyl flooring is an important step to ensure you have the correct amount of material for your project. Here's a guide to help you measure your space accurately:
1. Determine the Room Type:
Start by identifying the type of room you will be flooring, as different areas may have specific measurement requirements.
2. Measure the Length:
Using a measuring tape, measure the length of the room from one wall to the other. Take the longest measurement, even if it includes alcoves or recesses.
3. Measure the Width:
Similarly, measure the room's width from wall to wall. Again, take the longest measurement, considering any indentations or protrusions.
4. Calculate the Area:
To calculate the total area, multiply the length and width measurements. Convert the result to the desired unit of measurement, such as square feet or square meters.
5. Add 10% for Waste:
During installation, some flooring may be lost due to cutting or waste. To account for this, add 10% to the calculated area. This provides a buffer for unexpected material needs.
6. Adjust for Irregular Shapes:
If your room has irregular shapes, divide it into smaller rectangular or square sections. Calculate the area of each section separately and add the results together.
7. Include Transitions:
If you plan to install transitions between different flooring types or rooms, include their area in your measurements. Measure the length and width of the transition strips and add them to the total area.
8. Consider Underlayment:
If you are installing underlayment beneath your vinyl flooring, measure the same area and purchase the appropriate amount.
Tips:
- Use a laser level to ensure accurate measurements, especially in large or uneven spaces.
- Take multiple measurements at different points in the room to confirm accuracy.
- Round up your measurements to the nearest whole number or increment recommended by the flooring manufacturer.
- Keep a record of your measurements for future reference or when ordering materials.
- Allow for additional flooring in case of repairs or future expansion.
