How to Install Hardwood Flooring Over Particle Board

Installing hardwood flooring over particle board is an excellent option to improve the look and durability of your home. Here are the essential steps to ensure a successful installation:

1. Check Particle Board Subfloor:
Before beginning the installation, verify that the particle board subfloor is level, flat, and structurally sound. Any unevenness or damage must be repaired using a leveler compound or subfloor repair kit.

2. Install Moisture Barrier:
To prevent moisture from damaging the hardwood flooring, install a moisture barrier over the particle board. Use a polyethylene sheet that is 6 mil thick and overlap the seams by at least 6 inches. Tape the seams together to ensure a complete barrier.

3. Install Underlayment:
Underlayment provides a sound deadening layer and additional cushioning for the hardwood flooring. Choose a thin underlayment that is compatible with both particle board and hardwood flooring. Roll out the underlayment over the moisture barrier and staple it to the subfloor.

4. Acclimate Hardwood Flooring:
Before installing, allow the hardwood flooring to acclimate to the room temperature and humidity for several days. This helps prevent buckling or warping after installation.

5. Start Installation:
Begin installing the hardwood flooring in a corner of the room. Use a flooring nailer or brad nailer to secure the first few rows to the subfloor. Ensure that the boards are flush against each other and avoid leaving any gaps.

6. Continue Installation:
Continue installing the hardwood flooring by working your way across the width and length of the room. Stagger the joints between rows to increase the strength and durability of the floor.

7. Finish the Installation:
Once you reach the other side of the room, cut the final row to fit. Install the last few rows using a flooring nailer and ensure a tight fit against the wall. Use quarter-round or shoe molding to cover the expansion gap around the perimeter of the floor.
